Focus On The Next Game - McNulty

28 March 2024

Jimmy McNulty says his focus is always on Dale’s next game.

His side travel to Gateshead on Good Friday, as we enter the final six games of the season.

Asked after Saturday’s win over Maidenhead United whether the playoffs are on his man, McNulty stated he is just focused on his side’s performances.

“I’m not really one for looking at it [the league table] too regularly, I never have been,” he commented.

“For me personally, it wasn’t always helpful. I always wanted to focus on the next moment and the next game.

“We can chase wins but wins and losses don’t always tell the story of what you’re doing in every single moment and performance.

“The things I focus on are those moments in football matches – in possession, out of possession, mid-part of the pitch, high, low.

“As boring as that may sound, I believe that breaking the game down into its components and focusing on them, lets the table take care of itself.”

Speaking more broadly about Dale’s season so far, McNulty said:

“Truthfully, looking at where we are now, we are a team that has overdelivered on what we have had in terms of possibilities for success this year.

“To be where we are and be as comfortable as we are, and show the confidence and growth that we have, whilst changing the football and the mentality from the difficult times that all the fans have gone through, I think it’s amazing.

“Once we have time to reflect on this, I think it will be a hell of an achievement no matter what we end up with or without this season.”

Midfielder Ryan East said the squad are also taking it one game at a time.

“We’ve got key games coming up, against teams above us, in Gateshead and Oldham Athletic especially. Both are away, so if we can go there and the result we need, you never know.

“But we’ll take it one game at a time. We’re probably in a good position where teams won’t expect us to be there, but there’s no pressure on us. We can go about our business and if we win the games, you never know at the end of the season.”
