Josh Lillis On The Magic Of The FA Cup

30 November 2017

Goalkeeper Josh Lillis insists Dale are fully focussed ahead of Monday night’s FA Cup second round tie against Slough Town.

The match will be broadcast live on BT Sport (7.45pm KO), and sees Dale visit the Southern Premier League side’s Arbour Park stadium.

The Rebels currently sit in sixth place, and reached the second round stage by thrashing Gainsborough Trinity 6-0.

“Every game is tricky, especially with the magic of the FA Cup,” said Lillis.

“But we’ll go there as professionally as we can. We’re going down the day before and we’ll be taking it really, really seriously. We’re there to win.

“The losses at Oldham and Charlton were disappointing, but the last two games have been positive. Going into the Slough game off the back of two wins, we’re looking forward to it.”

Dale have reached the fourth round of the FA Cup in three of the last four seasons, and Lillis says the competition is hugely important to the Club and on a personal level.

“When you’re growing up it’s a massive competition, and it still is. It gives teams like us the opportunity to pit ourselves against the top teams if you can continue in the competition.

“My favourite memory during my time at Rochdale would definitely be the Leeds United game at home.

"Looking back at that, it was a fantastic day. It was a full house and we played so well and thoroughly deserved the win, thanks to two great goals from Hendo and Scotty Hogan’s first-half header.”

Dale go into the game off the back of cup success in the Checkatrade Trophy, beating Doncaster Rovers on penalties to reach the third round, in which Lillis saved the decisive penalty.

“I’ve managed to save one – with our lads that’s all it takes. I’ve got to give credit to them [the takers], the penalties were superb.

“It takes a lot of confidence and belief in yourself to step up and they did well.

“Winning breeds confidence. It’s been a bit of stop-start season so far. We’re looking to kick on now. We take every competition seriously.”
