Eoghan is a centre-half who left Bury to sign a two-year contract with Dale in July 2019.

Born in Cork, the defender arrived at the Crown Oil Arena after playing 35 times for The Shakers in 2018/19 as they clinched automatic promotion to League One.

The 25-year-old started his professional career at Celtic, having moved there when he was aged 16. After graduating from their Academy, he went on to make 13 first team appearances for the Scottish Premier League side, including featuring in the Champions League.

During his six years at Parkhead, Eoghan spent time out on loan at Oldham, Walsall and his hometown club, Cork City.

He has also been capped by the Republic of Ireland at U19 and U21 levels.

O’Connell replaced Ian Henderson as Dale captain for the 2020/21 campaign and began the season in fine style with his first goal for the club clinching a 1-0 win at Huddersfield in the Carabao Cup.

Despite Dale’s relegation last term, Eoghan penned a new 12-month contract at the Crown Oil Arena in June.
