Kyron Gordon Joins Dale

4 January 2024

Rochdale AFC is delighted to announce the signing of defender Kyron Gordon.

The 21-year-old, who can operate at centre-back or full-back, has joined on a deal until the end of the season.

Gordon says he is looking forward to linking up with Jimmy McNulty in the coming months.

“I’m excited and glad to have got it over the line,” he commented.

“I spoke to the gaffer [Jimmy McNulty] and I’ve watched a bit of Rochdale as well. I love the way they play, it suits me. I’m excited to get going.

“The type of player I am, I like to get the ball. Even if I lose it, I like to get it again. The culture suits me to a tee and there has been a lot of information to take on, but I’m getting to grips with it quite quickly.

“The key thing for me is that I’ll get minutes, and if I play well, I’ll get more minutes. I just want to play football, enjoy it and express myself.”

Jimmy McNulty is pleased to have him on board.

“Kyron is a good player that we have been aware of for some time,” said the Head Coach.

“He’s a bit of a hybrid full-back/centre-back. We believe we’ve needed some help in that area of the squad, and we think he can certainly help us.

“All the references I’ve had from people in the game are that he’s a good pro, he’s a winner and he plays from the right place, which is heart. So, he’s a good addition to the group in that regard as well.”

Gordon is a product of the Sheffield United Academy, having been a boyhood fan of the Blades.

He made ten appearances for the Bramhall Lane side, making his debut in an EFL Cup tie in August 2021. He is the younger brother of former Dale loanee Tyler Smith, who also made his debut for the Blades in that game.

After loan spells at Boston United and Boreham Wood in the previous two seasons, Gordon departed his boyhood club in the summer of 2023, before signing for AFC Fylde on a short-term deal in September.

Injury restricted the defender to just seven appearances, with his return to the Coasters’ matchday squad coming on Boxing Day at the Crown Oil Arena.

His contract at Mill Farm expired at the end of 2023 and he joined up with McNulty’s men earlier this week.

Gordon will wear number two during his time at the club.

Welcome to Rochdale, Kyron!
