Jimmy Keohane Set To Make 200th Appearance

24 January 2024

Jimmy Keohane's next appearance will be his 200th for Rochdale Football Club.

It is almost five years to the day that he joined the club, having signed on 1st February 2019, initially on a short-term deal until the end of the 2018/19 season.

Keohane has played in every outfield position during his time at the Crown Oil Arena. It’s fair to say that Swiss Army Jimmy - as he is affectionately known by some Dale fans - has really earned his nickname!

This season alone, we have seen the Irish footballer play in defence, midfield and attack!

The 33-year-old has predominantly played at full-back this season, but that hasn’t stopped him from finding the back of the net.

Keohane has scored six times for Jimmy McNulty’s side this season, taking his Dale total to 21. He’s not just been scoring the goals though - he has also been setting them up too.

He’s Rochdale’s joint top assister this season with five, alongside Adam Clayton, Kairo Mitchell and Louie Moulden.

173 of Keohane’s 199 games have come in the league, with the remaining 26 being played in other competitions.

We've taken a look back at his seasons with the club below.

2018/19 Season

In his debut season, he made eight appearances, featuring at right-back, particularly towards the end of the campaign.

He helped Dale claw their way out of the League One relegation zone, surviving with a game to spare.

2019/20 Season

Keohane signed a two-year deal in the summer of 2019, following his half-season spell at the Dale.

His first full campaign saw him rack up 38 games, again featuring mostly in defence.

Swiss Army Jimmy really started to earn his nickname as he featured at left-back, right-back and centre-back, as well as picking up a couple of appearances in midfield.

During that season, we saw Keohane partner up with the now Dale Head Coach Jimmy McNulty, at centre-back against Manchester United in the EFL Cup, as Dale took the Red Devils to a penalty shootout.

2020/21 Season

In the 2020/21 campaign, which was played behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Keohane made 50 appearances. He also scooped up three awards for Dale at the end of the season.

Jimmy K picked up the Dale Supporters Trust Player of the Season award as well as the Players’ Player of the Season accolade.

A brilliant team move against Accrington Stanley, rounded off by a superb curling effort from Keohane, meant that he also won the Goal of the Season award.

That goal was one of ten from that season, all of which came in the league.

2021/22 Season

Dale’s number 13 penned a two-year deal at the beginning of the 2021/22 season, following his three accolades in the previous campaign, committing his future to the club.

Keohane suffered a broken foot in November of that season, forcing him to be side-lined for the best part of three months.

Towards the end of the campaign, the Irishman underwent surgery on his shoulder following a long-term problem.

Despite his injury struggles, Keohane added another 31 appearances to his Dale tally whilst bagging two goals.

2022/23 Season

His luck with injuries didn’t go away, with Keohane agonisingly injuring his ankle in Dale’s final pre-season game against Port Vale just before the start 2022/23 season.

Keohane made his return after missing the opening six league games going on to add 42 games and three goals to his Dale total.

2023/24 Season

Jimmy K signed a new one-year deal at the beginning of the season as he continued his time with the club, playing under Jimmy McNulty.

Keohane has been ever-present in McNulty’s side ever since he became the Dale Head Coach. Dale's number 13 has started every game bar two this season, coming on as a substitute in both of those games.

As previously mentioned, the Irishman has notched six goals this season already, with the pick of the bunch coming against FC Halifax Town.

The 33-year-old was quick to react and picked Ryan Galvin’s pocket before shifting the ball from his right foot to his left, leaving the challenging defender behind him, before sitting down another defender as well as the keeper.

With 30 appearances in total this season, the Dale man is now only one appearance away from making his 200th for the club.

A fantastic achievement. Well done, Jimmy!
