Report | Boreham Wood 1-1 Dale

20 September 2023

Dale drew 1-1 with Boreham Wood away from home as Kairo Mitchell scored his third goal of the season.

Kairo Mitchell’s opener for Dale in the 47th minute was cancelled out just a minute later by Tyrone Marsh’s header.

Jimmy McNulty named an unchanged starting eleven from Saturday’s win over Barnet.

Cameron John was involved at both ends early on in the game, blocking a shot for Dale at one end and looking to flash a ball across the box at the other.

John’s effort was blocked behind for a corner after Ryan East found the Dale fullback with a neat pass, but the corner came to nothing.

Tyrese Sinclair, fresh off of winning the August Dale Trust Player of the Month award as well as scoring another two goals at the weekend, looked hungry for more this evening.

The winger cut in onto his right foot, looking to bend one into the top corner. His effort travelled just over the bar.

Sinclair and Jesurun Uchegbulam both had efforts blocked and saved retrospectively.

Dale dominated large parts of the first-half and were nearly rewarded after the half an hour mark.

Adam Clayton found Mitchell, whose shot was blocked before Keohane deflected Sinclair’s effort. The ball looked to be in. However, it crept wide of the post.

Sinclair cut in from the left to fire goalwards on his right foot once more, and just like his first effort, he fired just over the upright.

Dale had their lead just two minutes after the restart. Cameron John’s right-footed effort was spilt onto the bar by the Boreham Wood keeper before it dropped to Mitchell, who tapped it home to put Dale 1-0 up.

That lead did not last long though, as Tyrone Marsh headed the ball into the back of the net following a cross from the left-hand side to level the game up again.

Both sides had chances leading up to the hour mark, with Keohane getting the best of the bunch. It started when Uchegbulam dummied the ball, allowing it to pass by him, fooling the defender who was left behind as the Dale winger sprinted past him.

He cut in, looking to get a shot off, but was crowded out by the Boreham Wood defenders. The ball eventually fell to Keohane, who fired well over for Dale.

In the 76th minute, Mitchell was hacked down by a Boreham Wood man as their defender came through the back of the Dale forward with a high foot and with his studs showing. The referee did not see it, and play continued.

Whelan headed wide for the home side following Bush’s cross before Louie Moulden dived to his right to push away a shot that looked destined for the far corner.

Dale broke forward late on through Uchegbulam again. This time, he smashed a powerful ball across the goal from the right-hand side but unfortunately evaded his Dale teammates in the process.

Cameron John, who played superbly throughout the game, had the final say as he put a stop to a Boreham Wood attack with a brilliant challenge, ensuring that Dale were going to come away with at least a point.

Dale XI | Moulden, Keohane (80’ Oduroh), Ethan Ebanks-Landell, Nevett, John, Clayton, East, Gilmour (75’ Henderson), Sinclair, Uchegbulam, Mitchell.

Unused subs | McDermott, Conway, Ferguson.
