Report | Dale Women 7-0 Mancunian Unity Women Reserves

23 October 2023

Dale Women will meet Bury FC Women in the quarter-finals of the Manchester FA Women’s Challenge Cup following their 7-0 win against Mancunian Unity Women Reserves.

Following her eight goals in Dale’s 21-0 victory over East Leigh Juniors Ladies last Sunday in the Manchester FA Women’s Challenge Cup, Ellie Fergus scored another four goals this weekend.

Alicia Barnett like last weekend, scored another brace, with Shannon Gill scoring once, making it six goals in two games for her.

The Dale Women went into this game in high spirits following their brilliant result last weekend and another fantastic training session in the build-up to the game.

“We knew today’s game would be very tough for us, and it was exactly that,” commented Lee Atkinson.

“The Unity Reserves were well up for the game, and they started the game at a fast pace and were very physical.

“They put the Dale Women under pressure early on.

“However, it didn’t last too long as we were also well up for the game, and we more than matched their physical presence.

“We used our quality when in possession, which is what we worked on in training. It was how we was going to use their aggression and physicality against them.

“It was how we created gaps and how opportunities came for us in the game.

“It was another fantastic performance, and I’m also really happy to have picked up another clean sheet, especially against a good attacking side.

“I’m delighted to get through to the quarter-finals of the Manchester Challenge Cup.

“We know that we’ll be going up against an extremely good side in Bury, and we know that they play two divisions above us, but it will be a great opportunity for this group to show what they can do.

“We had two key players back from injury this week, as well as having a 16-year-old make her debut after progressing through the youth system.

“Things are definitely going in the right direction with this team, and I’m excited to see what the future holds.

“Thanks again to the Rochdale fans who came down to support us. Your support is very much appreciated, and we hope to see you all next Sunday as we look to progress in the Manchester League Challenge Cup, as we host Withington Women at Rochdale St Clements [2pm kick-off]."
