Match Report | Rochdale 2-2 Burscough FC (4-1 Pens)

18 October 2023

The Youth Team came from two goals behind to draw 2-2 against Burscough before progressing through to the next round of the FA Youth Cup after winning 4-1 on penalties.

Darren Ehimamiegho and Oscar Kelly scored to help Dale come from 2-0 down to take Burscough to penalties in the FA Youth Cup.

Dale scored all four of their spot kicks, with the visitors only managing to net once out of their three attempts.

The game didn’t take long to come to life as Harry Campbell tested his luck from range, rattling Lennon MacLorg’s crossbar.

Ten minutes later, both sides had chances to take the lead. Luke Mann for Dale capitalised on a short back pass before seeing his effort saved by Charlie King in the Burscough goal.

Moments later, the Dale upright was struck again as Thomas Holland shot from just inside the Dale half. His effort travelled over MacLorg and struck the woodwork again.

Tom Broadfoot put Burscough ahead after 21 minutes. A pass from the left found the forward, who controlled the ball before firing into the bottom left corner.

Nile Ayub looked to play the ball back to MacLorg, but the defender’s back pass was short, and Sam Roche was straight onto it. The Burscough number nine’s shot was sent over the Dale keeper, but once again, the bar was there to stop the ball from hitting the back of the net.

Luke Mann, who scored four in the previous qualifying round of the FA Youth Cup, had two chances in the space of a minute in the first-half.

His first effort was parried behind for a Dale corner, and his second effort was fired into the top corner of the net, but the linesman's flag was raised for offside before the Dale forward released his shot.

Mateus Mane had two chances blocked well by the Burscough defenders, whilst Mann had a header pushed over the bar.

Darren Ehimamiegho’s powerful shot towards the end of the first-half was again blocked well by a covering Burscough defender.

Mann had three efforts in the opening nine minutes after the break, firing off-target twice before stinging the hands of King.

Isaac Burgess made a superb tackle after King sent a long ball over the Dale defence, nearly catching them out. The Dale number six recovered well and stopped the Burscough attack.

MacLorg tipped a goal-bound cross over the bar before Burgess made another strong challenge to turn the ball behind for a corner.

Burscough captain Brad Edmond was there to meet the corner, heading home to give the visitors a two-goal advantage.

Burgess and Dale substitute Will Clift both fired efforts wide as the game reached the final 20 minutes.

It looked like it wasn’t going to be the Youth Team's day until Ehimamiegho pulled one back for Dale.

Mann held off the Burscough defender, buying himself a couple of seconds. He found his Dale teammate, who skipped past Harry McCormick’s challenge before firing into the top right corner.

Dale had the majority of chances as the game headed towards the full-time whistle, but they couldn’t find an equaliser.

That was until Leo Cooper’s pass found Kelly, who was calm and composed when firing his effort low into the bottom corner.

Braden Edghill, who came off the bench for Dale, made a great sliding challenge in the Dale box to deny Burscough from scoring a late winner.

The game went straight to penalties, and up first for Dale was captain John Dunlop, who fired home to give Lee Thorpe’s side a good start in the shootout.

Roche was the first to step up for the visitors. His effort was saved by MacLorg, who guessed right.

Kelly had to retake his penalty after the keeper was judged to come off his line before saving the Dale man's spot-kick. The winger, at the second time of asking, fired the ball into the net.

Burscough struck the post with their next attempt before Mann fired home to put Dale three-up.

Ben Nutbrown slotted the ball into the bottom corner to reduce that advantage, beating MacLorg, who did dive the right way.

All Dale had to do was score to win the game. Up stepped Corey Edwards, who put the ball into the back of the net to give Dale a 4-1 win on penalties and to send them into the next round of the FA Youth Cup.

Dale XI | MacLorg, Dunlop, Ayub (83’ Edghill), Burgess, Cooper, Dos Santos, Edwards, Mane (64’ Clift), Ehimamiegho, Mann, Kelly.
