Ferguson Becomes Fourth New Signing

23 June 2023

Rochdale Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Kyle Ferguson from Harrogate Town, in principle.

A central defender, Ferguson joins us on a free transfer and pens a two-year deal at the Crown Oil Arena, subject to medical.

The 23-year-old is looking forward to getting going at his new club.

“I’m buzzing that we’ve managed to get it done,” he commented.

“As soon as I knew there was interest, I was excited by it. I played at Rochdale last year and it’s a nice stadium, so I was pushing my agent to try and get it done as soon as possible.

“I can’t wait to get started in pre-season and meet the staff and players.

“Jimmy McNulty was one of the main reasons I wanted to join. We had a really good chat last week about how he wants to play this season, how the club is looking to move forward, so that’s what sold me the most.

“The club was a big draw and then when I spoke to him my heart was set. The way he speaks about football and the way he wants to play will suit me as a player.

“I think it’s a place I can do well and I’m really excited.”

Head Coach Jimmy McNulty commented: “I’m really happy to get Kyle over the line.

“He’s a player that has great future potential, but is also ready to compete for a starting place in our team right now.

“He has experience in the Football League as well as the National League and has experience of playing for points.

“He can handle all basic requirements of defending in the National League but is also very comfortable with the ball at his feet, so it’s exciting to have him with us.”

Son of Rangers legend Barry Ferguson, Kyle spent time in the youth academy at Ibrox, as well as Kilmarnock and Airdrieonians.

He made his professional debut at the age of 16 for Clyde, before moving across the pond to the USA in 2017, where he played college football for Medaille University in Buffalo, New York.

A brief spell in Sweden with second division Ytterhogdals IK followed, after which the six-foot five defender spent a year in Ireland with Waterford FC.

He impressed with The Blues and caught the eye of Altrincham, who he joined in February 2022.

An impressive end to the 2021/22 campaign led to a move to Harrogate last summer, where he made eight appearances, including in their win at the Crown Oil Arena in December.

He re-joined Altrincham on loan in March 2023 and made ten appearances before the end of the campaign.
