A Good Result - McNulty

29 July 2023

Jimmy McNulty was pleased to get a win against higher division opposition on Saturday.

Dale were 1-0 winners over Sky Bet League Two side Bradford City, in our final pre-season game, thanks to Devante Rodney’s goal.

The Head Coach was pleased with the performance against a side he thinks is one of the best in League Two.

“I’ve watched them against Hull City and Middlesbrough and they were impressive in both games,” McNulty commented to local media post-match.

“They’ve got quite an imperious squad for League Two – they’re a powerhouse of an outfit.

“But we planned for that. It’s not nice being in your home stadium against a team that can outgun you, but that’s where we are now.

“We’re a National League team with a very humble budget, and a very humble squad that’s low on numbers. All we can be, is the best and most organised we can be, which hopefully that helps us towards some positive results.

“It was a good result today and we had good organisation. When we grew into the game, some of our own pictures started to come out and we had some of our own threat.”

McNulty admits there is still work to be done though, ahead of the visit of Ebbsfleet United on the opening day of the Vanarama National League campaign next weekend.

“I still feel we need more. We’ve still got trialists and really young players coming off the bench, without any real injuries yet, which is concerning for me.

“I would like a few more bodies in the building – I don’t know if that’s going to be possible. They’ve got to be the right bodies, but from a budget perspective, we’re at a point where there will have to be compromises with any signings we make.

“There’s a funny thing going on – we’re the ex-Football League club so we should have the ex-Football League budget, but the budget doesn’t reflect that.

“There’s going to be things that we have to do with players in our building, in terms of developing really young players. We won’t be able to sign tried and tested type players from this point on.”
