Report | Leyton Orient 2-1 Dale

14 February 2023

Dale suffered defeat at league leaders Leyton Orient, despite a spirited second-half display.

Ruel Sotiriou and Idris El Mizouni put Orient two ahead at half-time, before Danny Lloyd gave Dale a lifeline 11 minutes after the break.

But it would prove to be just a consolation, as Dale couldn’t find a late equaliser.

Jim Bentley named an unchanged starting eleven from Saturday’s game against Northampton Town, with Ethan Ebanks-Landell back on the bench after suspension.

Dale were put under pressure from the off by Orient, with Richard O’Donnell saving efforts from Tom James and Jayden Sweeney.

Kieran Sadlier headed wide and Sotiriou fired a first-time shot over the bar, before he put the hosts ahead in the 18th minute.

James sent a lofted ball over the top which Sotiriou latched on to, firing an effort past O’Donnell at the near post.

Dale did have a great chance to level less than ten minutes later. Ian Henderson sprayed a pass out to Abraham Odoh on the right, who drove forward and found Lloyd. He laid off Henderson, who didn’t catch his first-time effort cleanly, allowing Lawrence Vigouroux to collect.

It was a missed chance Dale would rue, as Orient doubled the lead three minutes later. A free-kick into the area fell for El Mizouni, who struck a crisp effort into the far corner.

The hosts had further chances through Aaron Drinan, Sadlier and Ed Turns, before El Mizouni rattled the woodwork with a deflected effort from range.

Theo Archibald fired a volley over the Dale goal, whilst at the other end, Max Taylor saw a shot well blocked and Toby Mullarkey shot wide from distance before the break.

Dale made it much more of a contest in the second-half, as Mullarkey tested Vigouroux from distance before Lloyd halved the deficit shortly before the hour mark.

A swift move forward found Quigley on the left, who played a reverse pass inside to Lloyd. He took a touch before rifling a left-foot shot into the far top corner.

Bentley’s men looked much more of a threat but couldn’t quite create a clear-cut chance that would bring about an equaliser.

Ebanks-Landell and James Ball came on for Rhys Bennett and Toumani Diagouraga midway through the half, shortly before Dale almost took advantage of a loose free-kick from the hosts which Lloyd picked up on, but his cross into the middle didn’t find a Dale man.

Sadlier fired an effort off target and into the arms of O’Donnell, whilst Drinan fired wide of the far post.

Tahvon Campbell, Femi Seriki and D’Mani Mellor were all introduced, but Dale couldn’t find a route to goal that would provide the equaliser.
