A Look At Dan Adshead's First Spell

1 February 2023

As announced yesterday, Dan Adshead has rejoined Dale for the remainder of the season, joining on loan from Cheltenham Town.

The midfielder left the club in June 2019 after being with Dale since the age of eight. He spent two seasons with the Rochdale first-team before joining Norwich City in June 2019.

Following that he spent the 2020/21 season on loan to Dutch second-tier club SC Telstar, before going on loan to Gillingham in League One in August 2021.

Cheltenham Town was the next destination for Dan as he signed for them in June last year, which leads onto him rejoining Dale on loan.

2017/18

Adshead is a product of the successful Rochdale Academy and had spent nine years with the club working his way up through the age groups and into the first team until his departure.

The now 21-year-old got the call up to make his senior Rochdale debut in September 2017 at just 16-years-old, in Dale’s EFL Trophy tie at Bury. He played the full game and assisted Bradden Inman to double Dale’s lead in a 4-0 win.

Adshead went on to make his EFL Debut in December of the same year, before starting in Dale’s FA Cup third-round victory over Doncaster Rovers in January 2018.

The midfielder also made a substitute appearance at Wembley Stadium for Dale in a fifth-round FA Cup replay against Tottenham Hotspur later that year.

At the end of the season he signed scholarship terms after leaving school in June 2018.

2018/19

Adshead didn’t need to wait too much longer to sign his first professional contract. After turning 17-years-old, in September 2018 he signed a three-year deal with the club.

Things continued to be on the up for the young man. Days after captaining Dale for the first time, in a EFL Trophy tie against Leicester City Under-21’s in Novemeber, Adshead was called up to the England Under-18 squad for their four-nation tournament in Spain.

He made his international debut in their first match against The Netherlands, scoring England’s second in a 2-2 draw.

The midfielder made a substitute appearance in the next game and started in their third, meaning that Adshead had played in all three matches, England went on to win the mini tournament.

Less than a month later, he scored his first Rochdale goal, netting a fine strike in Dale’s 2-0 win over Oldham Athletic in the EFL Trophy.

Adshead rounded off a brilliant 2018/19 campaign by being named as League One’s LFE Apprentice of the Year.

In June 2019 it was confirmed that Adshead had completed a move to Norwich City, who at the time were in the Premier League.
