Report | Dale Women 2-1 Athletico Middleton Ladies

20 December 2023

Dale Women are League Premier Cup semi-finalists after beating Athletico Middleton Ladies 2-1 on Sunday.

Lee Atkinson’s side went into the game with a lot of players missing out through injury. He wanted his side to reach their first semi-final under his management, and they did just that thanks to an own goal and a match-winning strike from Shannon Gill.

“We were missing a few players due to injuries and illness; however, we were more than up for Sunday’s game,” said Atkinson.

“It was a great opportunity for some of our other players to step up.

“We started on the front foot, moving the ball around nicely and creating some good opportunities, but the Middleton keeper was in top form.

“Middleton did exactly as we expected. They were physical, well organised and looked to catch us on the break.

“However, our defence was solid, and Emily in goal, dealt with anything that they had to throw at her.

“We went 1-0 up through an own goal. Their defender headed the ball into her own net as we were well on top.

“In the second half, it was more of the same. When we had the ball on the floor, we looked impressive. We just needed to be a little more patient in the final third.

“There was a number of strong challenges from some of the Middleton players, which on another day may have seen action taken against them. They did, however, still pose a threat.

“It was a mistake from us that gifted them an equaliser, which wasn’t deserved.

“The game looked like it was heading to penalties. However, in the 90th minute, we worked the ball down the channel brilliantly, finding Shannon Gill, who sent us into the semi-finals of the competition with a spectacular strike from the edge of the box.

“We’ll face a difficult trip to Atherton in the semi-final.”

Kirsty Bella was awarded Player of the Match in what was a thrilling semi-final clash with Middleton.

Atkinson finished by commending his player's efforts so far this season.

“The Women have finished 2023 strong, and we can’t wait to see what 2024 brings.

“We really do have a fantastic team here, and although our performances have been a little bit inconsistent at times, we’re looking ahead to what we know will be a positive 2024.

“Thanks to everyone who made the game on Sunday, and we hope to have your continued support in 2024.”
