Breaking Down Hendo’s 200 Goals In English Football

30 December 2023

Ian Henderson’s goal against AFC Fylde on Tuesday meant that the 38-year-old hit yet another milestone, notching his 200th goal in English football.

We’ve taken a look at how Rochdale’s all-time leading goal scorer has reached this feat.

2002/03

Henderson was a product of the Norwich City youth academy, progressing through the ranks before making his debut on 23 October 2002 in the Football League First Division, now known as the Championship.

The striker notched his first professional goal and only goal of the 2002/03 season only a couple of weeks later, on 2 November 2002, in a 4-2 defeat to Wimbledon.

2003/04

Hendo’s second season with Norwich proved to be more fruitful as he bagged four goals and was involved in The Canaries’ promotion to the Premier League.

2004/05, 2005/06 & 2006/07

The forward stayed with Norwich for the next three seasons, making three appearances in the Premier League.

The Canaries were relegated back to the Championship in the 2004/05 season. Henderson added one more goal to his tally in the 2005/06 campaign before joining Rotherham United in January 2007 following an extended layoff because of a knee injury.

The striker added another goal to his tally before the conclusion of the 2006/07 season, scoring his first goal in League One.

2007/08 & 2008/09

Northampton Town were the next club to sign the striker. He spent a season and a half there before joining Luton Town.

Henderson netted once during his time at Luton in League Two, taking his total amount of goals in English football to eight.

2009/10 & 2010/11

In January 2010, Hendo signed for League One side Colchester United following a short spell with Ankaragücü in Turkey.

He netted twice in his first campaign before scoring 11 times the next season. Ten of those goals came in League One, with the remaining one coming in the EFL Cup.

2011/12 & 2012/13

Henderson hit double figures for the second season in a row, scoring ten times in total, with nine goals in League One and one goal in the EFL Cup.

The forward scored three times for Colchester United in the 2012/13 League One season before joining Rochdale for the first time in February 2013. Hendo scored three times in the following months, helping Dale to a 12th place finish in League Two.

2013/14, 2014/15 & 2015/16

The 2013/14 season was one to be proud of for Henderson. Not only did he score 12 goals, but he played his part in Dale’s promotion to League One.

11 of those 12 came in League Two, with the remaining one being THAT goal against Leeds United.

Hendo’s most prolific campaign so far came in the 2014/15 season as he managed to bag 22 goals in League One, finishing as the runner-up to Joe Garner, who scored three more goals for Preston North End to grab the golden boot award.

In the 2015/16 season, the striker scored 13 times in League One, one of which marked his 50th goal for Rochdale.

2016/17, 2017/18, 2018/19 & 2019/20

Another nineteen goals came from Hendo in the 2016/17 season. One came in the EFL Cup against Chesterfield, another one was in the Football League Trophy, two came in the FA Cup, with the remaining 15 all coming in League One.

In the 2017/18 season, Henderson scored 13 times in League One, once in the Football League Trophy and six times in the FA Cup, only one goal behind the eventual top scorer in the competition that season, Will Grigg.

The 2018/19 campaign saw Hendo superbly bag another 20 League One goals as well as one goal in the FA Cup. The forward scored his 100th Dale goal in November 2018 against Gateshead in a 2-1 win.

A goal in the EFL Cup, as well as 15 strikes in League One in 2019/20 meant that Hendo’s total goals in English football rose to 160.

2020/21 & 2021/22

Henderson spent the next two seasons at Salford City, where he scored 20 goals in League Two and once in the EFL Cup.

The striker needed just 19 more goals to reach the 200 mark for total goals in English Football. However, this wasn’t the only milestone in sight for Henderson, as he only needed four more goals to become Rochdale’s all-time leading goal scorer.

2022/23 & 2023/24

To the Dale fan’s delight, the club announced Henderson’s return in the summer of 2022. After scoring against Accrington Stanley, Salford City and Tranmere Rovers, Hendo tied Reg Jenkins’ record with 129 Dale goals.

The record breaker came against Salford City in November 2022, as Hendo scored the only goal of the game to cement his place in the Rochdale history books.

In total Hendo bagged eight League Two goals and two Football League Trophy goals in the 2022/23 season.

With just over half of the National League games played for Dale this season, Hendo has bagged nine goals in 25 games.

His ninth came against AFC Fylde on Boxing Day, as he finished in true Hendo fashion by lobbing the goalkeeper. Kwaku Oduroh later added a second for Dale, meaning that Jimmy McNulty's side claimed the three points on a special day for Henderson as he reached 200 goals in English football.
