Jim Bentley Previews Sutton United Trip

18 November 2022

Jim Bentley hopes his side can put in another solid performance on the road this weekend, as Dale travel to Sutton United.

His side have picked up seven points from their most recent four away games and the gaffer feels unlucky not to have taken more.

“On the road, our performances, in general, have been good,” said Bentley.

“Our record away from home has been good. Even in some of the games that we’ve lost, we feel like we’ve been unlucky not to get anything out of them.

“Spirits will be high going into the match, and we have to go there with the mindset of believing in ourselves and giving our all.

“It would be fantastic to go into two weeks without a game off the back of a win, but more importantly it would be nice to get points on the board to help drag us away from the bottom two.

“We’re looking to go and win the game, but we know it’s a tough place to go.

“Matt Gray [Sutton United manager] and his assistant Micky Stephens are both good, honest people. They’re winners. They had a good promotion into League Two and last year had a good, solid season.

“They’re not in the best of form at this moment in time but they’re a more than capable outfit. They’ve made their home ground a bit of a fortress, so we know we’ll be in for a tough game.

“But as I said, we’re looking to go there and win the game. It would be great to take something on our travels and give the fans something to cheer.”

The gaffer also reserved praise for Dale’s Youth Team, who beat Shrewsbury Town 2-1 away from home on Wednesday to progress to the third round of the FA Youth Cup.

“I went to watch the game myself and I was so pleased for them.

“It was a hard-earned victory and they deserve credit for their performance.

“It doesn’t matter who you are, winning breeds positivity and it’s a great, positive story for the football club.

“Hopefully they will get a good draw in the next round and have the opportunity to impress again.”
