Club Staffing Changes

2 July 2021

The club can confirm that George Delves, previously Club Secretary, has moved into the role of Chief Operating Officer.

Furthermore, John Smallwood, a former Associate Director of the club, will return to assist the Board on a consultancy basis.

On the appointments, Chairman Simon Gauge said: “We’ve made one or two changes behind the scenes, in that George Delves is now Chief Operating Officer, rather than the secretary of the club. It just expands his duties to what he was actually doing anyway within the club.

“We’re also very keen on getting the share issue to supporters up and running. To that front, we’ve taken on John Smallwood on a consultancy basis. He’s worked with the club previously and will start driving the share issue forward so we can get it to fruition as quickly as possible.

“I think we’re well set now to move forward. We’re still looking at recruiting new directors. We’re looking at particular areas of the business where we need specialists to come in and give us a hand. That will be going on in the next couple of weeks.”

On moving into the role of Chief Operating Officer, George Delves commented: “It is important to be clear that this isn’t a direct replacement for the CEO role, rather that there has been a fundamental shift in how the club wishes to function, meaning that specific role is no longer required at the present time.

“The duties associated with that role previously will be absorbed by the new Board and the new Senior Management Team. The Board will lead on areas such as financial and non-financial governance, along with medium to long-term club strategy, while the Senior Management Team will focus more on day-to-day football and non-football operations.

“Our three-person Senior Management Team will head up three broad areas of Football, Commercial and Operations (which will span both Football and Commercial). The former will be overseen by our new First Team Manager. As such, we will not be progressing with the recruitment of a Sporting Director in the short-term as previously advertised, although we may revisit this in future.

“From a personal point of view, I am of course extremely pleased to accept this interim position. Having spent over 15 years in professional club environments, the last six of which have been in similar posts to this, I feel well equipped succeed.

“Nobody was anticipating that we would be looking for a new First Team Manager at this stage. However, I can assure everyone that the Board and I are conducting a thorough and detailed recruitment process, as the appointment is obviously a critical one.”
