Just Rewards - Eoghan O'Connell

19 April 2021

Captain Eoghan O’Connell says securing three points on Saturday was “just rewards” for the performance against Accrington Stanley.

“I’m delighted,” said the Rochdale Captain, as he reflected on Dale’s 3-1 win over Accrington Stanley at the Crown Oil Arena.

“It’s just rewards for a good performance today. To get three points after the way we played is huge. We’re delighted and very happy, and we roll onto Tuesday night now.

“For large spells we implemented our style on the game and played the way we wanted to, to try and control the game, which gave us a good foot hold.

“You go ahead and then concede, which we had to bounce back from, and we showed character to do that. To then impose ourselves back on the game and play the way we wanted to for the rest of the game showed great character, like I said, and we’re just very happy.

“We’ll work hard to recover now and get ready for Tuesday [against Blackpool]. It’s nice to roll into another game, but we need to take each game as it comes and play each game in isolation on its merits.

“We’ve done that over the last few months and we’ve shown that with the victories over the last few games. We’ll take the same approach to Tuesday night and we'll make sure everyone is ready, and see where it take us.”

He added: “In recent weeks, or over the last month or so, barring Fleetwood, the performances have been really good. We went to Hull and Sunderland and didn’t get a result, but the performances were still there and we were able to take positives from that to keep going. We’re getting our rewards now with two in a row, but we’re just keen to move onto the next one now and to try and implement our style of play and to have a good performance again on Tuesday night and see where that takes us.

“It’s easy to be down on yourself after those games [like Hull and Sunderland], especially looking at the table, but we don’t really do that. We keep going and I’m one of those who likes to strip games back and I like to watch them back.

“Even when watching those games back I can see, and the lads can see, the level of performance is there and the effort is there, so we’ve got something to build on and something to take from those games. So maybe when the results do arrive people are surprised, but we’re not because we’ve put in the work over the last few months or so that the results deserve.”
