Interview | BBM's Post-Match Reaction - Fleetwood Town

11 April 2021

Manager Brian Barry-Murphy on Dale’s 1-0 defeat to Fleetwood Town…

“Very disappointed. In terms of our performances levels over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been really happy as I think we’ve put in really good performances, but I just think we didn’t show up today. We didn’t play well and I don’t think we deserved anything from the game at all,” said BBM.

“People, our supporters, you, will be sick of me telling how well we’ve played when we haven’t got certain results and we’ve seen in the last few weeks how our performances have led us into getting results, but today I just thought we were technically really poor.

“We didn’t keep the ball and I thought we were far too direct. Fleetwood were, but I thought any problems that occurred today were of our own doing. I’m very disappointed and I’m also disappointed in myself in terms of failing to get the players in the correct condition to perform to the levels. We’re very much in it together as a club and myself and I feel deeply disappointed on behalf of everybody.”

Eoghan O’Connell’s second half own goal proved to be the difference between the two side at the Highbury Stadium. The Dale skipper inadvertently turned Wes Burns’ low cross in from the right into his own net from close range.

“It [the goal] was an isolated moment in the game but I think if you play the way we did as a whole, and I include myself in that, you leave yourself open to something like that happening in the box.

“We didn’t have enough control, we didn’t have enough moments and we created little. We created little on Monday against Ipswich but that was a very hard fought game in difficult conditions, but, in my opinion, the game was there for us today but we just didn’t take control of it. We waited and that can happen.

“Even our attacking moments were sporadic. I thought Aaron [Morley] had scored, I thought maybe Ollie [Rathbone] had scored in the first half but they were just very fleeting moments and not enough for us to say that we were hard done by, because we weren’t. We got what we deserved and I’m very disappointed.”
