Rochdale midfielder Joe Thompson has won the Laureus Sporting Moment of the Month award for May.
Joe was recognised for his return from battling cancer, for a second time, to appear for Dale at Wembley Stadium in Dale’s Emirates FA Cup fifth round replay against Tottenham Hotspur.
On winning the award, Joe said: “Thank you so much to everyone for the incredible support which has helped me win the Laureus Sporting Moment public vote for May.
“I hope my story offered hope or a little inspiration to people out there. Being nominated for the Award was an honour but to win it is just incredible.
“This is for anyone out there who is fighting for something in their life. Never give up.”
The ‘Laureus Sporting Moment of the Year Award’, voted for by sports fans around the world, is presented at the annual Laureus World Sports Awards, the most prestigious awards event on the international sporting calendar.
Each month, from March through to December, the public pick their Laureus Sporting Moment of the Month from four emotional videos which bring to life the message that sport has the power to change the world.
Every monthly winner will then be in contention for the Laureus Sporting Moment of the Year, where after a final online global poll, the overall winner will be revealed at the 2019 Laureus World Sports Awards.
