FA Cup Flashback | Dale 2-0 Coventry City

25 January 2018

Ahead of Saturday's Emirates FA Cup fourth round tie against Millwall, we take a look back at Dale's previous victory at this stage of the competition.

Prior to the 2013/14 season, Dale had reached the fourth round of the FA Cup just three times in the entire history of the club.

Two of those seasons saw the club advance to the fifth round, the latest of which came in the 2002/03 season with a memorable 2-0 victory over Coventry City.

Having beaten Peterborough United, Bristol Rovers and Preston North End in previous rounds, Paul Simpson’s side came up against a Coventry team who were unbeaten in their previous ten matches.

Paul Connor opened the scoring shortly after the half hour mark, before Gareth Griffiths then doubled the lead with a towering header following the interval.

Neil Edwards made some fine saves towards the end of the game as the Division One side flew forward, helping Dale hold on to a memorable victory and set up a fifth round tie against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Dale XI: Edwards, Evans, Griffiths, Grand, Hill, Flitcroft, Melaugh, Oliver, Simpson (McEvilly 74), Platt, Connor (Townson 84).

Subs not used: Gilks, Hodges, Warner.
