Report: Plymouth Argyle 1-1 Dale

28 October 2017

Rochdale earned a well-deserved point at Home Park, in a 1-1 draw with Plymouth Argyle.

Dale were behind inside the opening minute when Joel Grant headed home, but Matty Done equalised just after the half hour mark.

The better chances fell Dale’s way in the second half, but they couldn’t grab a winner.

Keith Hill named an unchanged starting line-up for the fourth consecutive match, meaning Ian Henderson made his 500th career appearance.

Dale got off to the worst start imaginable, when the home side broke the deadlock inside the opening minute.

Harrison McGahey’s misplaced pass was seized upon and played wide to Graham Carey. He sent his cross to the back post, where Grant nodded past Josh Lillis.

However, Dale recovered well from that early setback. Henderson had an effort headed behind for a corner, before Bradden Inman curled a shot wide.

Carey then tested Lillis with a free-kick from distance which the Dale stopper had to turn wide with a diving stop.

Inman had the ball in the back of the net for Dale, when he turned home the rebound that came from MJ Williams’ spilt shot, but he was deemed to be offside.

Dale grabbed a deserved equaliser just after half hour mark. Williams’ didn’t catch his effort sweetly, but it fell to Done, who turned and shot clinically into the bottom corner from 12 yards out.

Inman dragged a shot wide of the far post after working in his way into the area, and Lillis ensured the teams went into the break level, saving a one-on-one effort from Grant.

Dale started the second much better than they did the first, as Done had an effort turned behind at the near post.

There was a scare at the back when Lillis couldn’t hold Carey’s free-kick, but he pounced on it at the second attempt just before it crossed the line.

Done, getting into dangerous areas, had another shot saved on the angle, before Henderson was inches away from getting on the rebound.

Kgosi Ntlhe replaced Joe Bunney shortly before the hour mark, and the substitute set up Henderson with a low ball from the left, but the skipper’s shot was blocked a couple of yards out by an Argyle defender.

Inman had a shot from range deflected over, and Carey fired a volley into the floor and wide for the hosts.

Steven Davies replaced goalscorer Done late as Dale searched for a winner, but in the end they had to settle for a well-earned point at Home Park.
