Manager Keith Hill has confirmed that Marcus Holness will find out the extent of his injury next week.
The defender, who was on trial at the club, sustained the injury in Tuesday night’s pre-season friendly against AFC Fylde.
“He’s seeing a specialist on Monday and then we’ll know the full ramifications of the injury,” Hill told Dale PlayerHD.
“But it doesn’t look good and it didn’t look good. Those are the harsh realities of football. Marcus has been on trial at the football club and I thought he was doing exceptionally well, and then unfortunately he has got this injury. It could alter the whole landscape with respect to his future - that’s not just his future this season, but also his future for seasons to come.
“I’ve been deliberating. I’ve been thinking about what has happened and thinking about what happened prior to the injury and how well he had done. I’m now in the process of getting back in touch with Marcus to see what we do next because he needs support, there’s no question about that.”
