Manager Keith Hill reflects on Dale’s “amazing performance” in the side’s 3-2 win over Scunthorpe United…
Joe Thompson opened the scoring in the first half and Ollie Rathbone doubled Dale’s advantage early after the break. Calvin Andrew netted the third to put Keith Hill’s side 3-0 up with 75 minutes on the clock.
Rochdale had looked to have put the game out of sight but the Iron netted twice in a four minute spell to set-up a nervy last few minutes, but the win was never in doubt and Dale saw the game out comfortably.
“The performance was amazing, absolutely amazing,” said Hill. “We came off the pitch there and Joe Thompson said ‘we made hard work of that’, but we didn’t.
“Their first goal is fortunate. Their second goal is a free-kick and there’s an argument about whether or not it’s offside, but we shouldn’t be debating the score line.
“The performance from every single one of my players was amazing. Don’t look too closely at the result with respect to the goals that the opposition have scored, because the performance was amazing and I’m really pleased about.
“I can’t take anything away from those players with respect to that performance. For them to say ‘I trust you Gaffer, this is what we’ve got to do against them’ was brilliant to see in action. It was one of the best games I’ve witnessed after having said to the players this is what we’ve got to do. It was amazing.
“We knew what had to do today. We had to be at our best, we had to relax in performance and show our quality, and I thought we did that. The score line doesn’t do our performance justice.
“We deserved that victory today, because of the energy, the commitment and the quality that we played with. But for me, the most important thing was that those players trusted the way that I said I could win that game today.”
