Manager Keith Hill has told Dale PlayerHD that Steven Davies is a really good signing for the football club.
The forward put pen to paper on a one-year-deal earlier this week and Hill is pleased to have secured his services.
Hill commented: “He has got pedigree and he is a player that I’ve admired for a long, long time since he made his debut at Tranmere.
“There’s a game brain there in the same way as Grant Holt had a game brain. He’s only 28, so, for me, it’s a really positive signing.
“It would have been ideal to have brought Steve on in the last 10-15 minutes of the game against Sheffield United, as an alternative to Calvin Andrew.
“Calvin is very good in both boxes and I need that type of player to come on and replace Calvin, or start in front of Calvin depending on fatigue, form and availability, and that’s what we’ve brought him in for. It’s a really good signing.”
He continued: “It gives us the bodies to hopefully deal with the closed window. If I’m being honest, I want one more player. I need a utility defender - someone who can cover on the right hand side, especially in central defence or in the right back area of the pitch.
“Joe Rafferty got injured this week and we had to take Andy [Cannon] out of midfield and play him at right back. He can do a great job for us there but I think we lost something in midfield.
“We need that ability to adapt and play in different positions but to also have a focus on three points. We’ve always had that flexibility and it’s important we still have that when you’ve got a small squad.
“I was talking to the Chairman over the course of the week and I’ve got potentially 20 senior outfield professionals. Three of those are out injured at this moment in time.
“It’s important we have the nucleus of the squad together through until at least January and that’s where I think it [the addition of Steven] is an invaluable addition.”
