Rochdale’s under 18 side exited the Youth Alliance Cup at the first round stage after a penalty shoot-out defeat to Preston North End on Tuesday afternoon.
The sides had to be separated by spot kicks after the game at Victory Park finished 3-3.
The Lillywhites had taken the lead, before Harry Pratt drew Dale level. Preston went on to open up a 3-1 advantage, but two penalties from Dom Reid ensured Rochdale remained in the tie, sending the match to spot kicks.
The home side progress to the next round of the competition with a 5-4 win on penalties.
Dale are back in action on Tuesday 9th September with a home league game against Accrington Stanley. Kick-off at Stainton Park is 2pm.
