Job Description

Salary based on qualifications and experience

Role overview
To manage and maintain Spotland Stadium pitch on a day to day basis. The Groundsman is responsible for ensuring that all facilities are available, prepared and safe for use as required by Rochdale AFC and Rochdale Hornets through effective planning and scheduling, communication, supervision of the assistant groundsman, managing maintenance of machinery and equipment and allocation of resources.

This is a hands on role where the Groundsman will be responsible for all aspects of preparing Spotland stadium pitch. 

Responsibilities
Preparation and maintenance of Spotland stadium pitch and training ground.

Preparing, implementing and monitoring weekly, monthly and annual maintenance programmes to ensure the required high standard of surface is maintained, taking into account budgets, priorities, level of use and standard of play.

As Groundsman you will take the lead role in preparation and maintenance of Spotland stadium pitch and have the knowledge and experience to guide and support the assistant groundsman, sub contractors and volunteers and address any technical issues.

Managing staff
Supervising the assistant groundsman, sub contractors and volunteers and managing the day to day operations undertake to meet the requirements of Spotland Stadium Company. Ensuring high standards of work are maintained and tasks and tight schedules are completed in the most efficient and appropriate way.

Induction of new starters and the ongoing training for yourself and development of the assistant groundsman and working with the chief executive, stadium company and manament team of Rochdale AFC and Rochdale Hornets to ensure that any performance and/or disciplinary issues are addressed in timely manner and in line with Spotland Stadium management companies procedures.

Effective time management ensuring that lunch and break times are adhered to, work is completed to timescales/schedules that is driven by work requirements/fixtures. Also for monitoring sickness, absence and holiday ensuring holiday cover is in place and that holidays are not booked during peak work (football and rugby seasons) periods.

Communication
Effective and timely communication with the chief executive, office and management team of Rochdale AFC and Rochdale Hornets. Expected to demonstrate an understanding of the requirements/expectations of the Spotland Stadium Company, Rochdale AFC, Rochdale Hornets and to give impartial advice based on best practice, budgetary considerations and factors such as timing, manpower available and weather etc.

Ensuring all sporting programmes, timetables, fixtures and special events calendars are received and to plan preparation of the Spotland pitch and training ground and advice on pitch conditions accordingly.

Obtaining all information required for the smooth day to day management/maintenance of the Spotland pitch and effectively communicating and making this available to the assistant groundsman, chief executive, stadium company, Rochdale AFC and Rochdale Hornets management teams such that service is not compromised by planned or unplanned absence.

Scheduling
Preparing, implementing and monitoring weekly, monthly work schedules allocating grounds maintenance equipment to the assistant groundsman and resource to meet all requirements in the most efficient way.

Equipment and materials
Effective machinery management through arranging timely servicing of all machinery. Close liaison with the chief executive regarding material, machinery requirements, including hire of specialist contractors.

Health and Safety
Having a full understanding of the Health and Safety regulations that apply and a thorough working knowledge of Spotland Stadium Companies health and safety procedures and documentation, contributing to the ongoing updating of these as appropriate. Promoting safe working practices at all times for all employees, contractors, volunteers and leading by example.

Ensuring Spotland Stadiums associated areas e.g. the dump/skip area are at all times kept clean and tidy, that all grounds maintenance equipment is washed and cleaned after use and that the use and clearance of the dump/skip area is monitored and managed. 

Ensuring all pesticides, herbicides, liquid and granular feeds and fuels are stored in the correct manner and container. Keep an up to date record of all stock and include times/quantities and dates of use.

Following guidelines and procedures
Working within and promoting all policies and procedures as set out by the Spotland Stadium Company. 

Management information
Advising on pitch conditions and requirements for, maintaining current high standards and improvements as necessary. Contributing to annual budget setting process providing full and accurate information on material and grounds maintenance requirements 

Necessary skills and experience
Extensive, recent and relevant experience in specific areas of groundsmanship associated with the maintenance of a professional football and rugby club stadium pitch.

Proven people management experience and skills.

Experience of operation and maintenance of all grounds maintenance machinery including strimmers, pitch marking boxes, mowers, tractors and all specialised sports maintenance equipment etc.

Inter-personal and communication skills including effective problem solving and facilitation 

Health and safety regulations and procedures

A full clean driving and towing licence
