Niall Canavan signed a two-year contract with Dale in May 2016 following a successful loan spell at the Crown Oil Arena in the final two months of last season.
The 26-year-old joined Dale after being released by Scunthorpe, where has been since 2004, originally as a youth team player, before signing his first professional contract in 2009.
Scunthorpe picked Canavan up from Leeds City Boys U15s and after captaining their youth side, he made his first team debut during a Championship game versus Sheffield Wednesday.
Towards the end of the 2010/11 season, Canavan was loaned out to Shrewsbury, but he returned to establish himself in the first team at Glanford Park and played in all-but-one of United’s 46 league games during their 2013/14 promotion campaign.
