Keith Keane joined Dale on loan from Cambridge in the summer 2016 transfer window, signing a deal until the following January.
As soon as that deal expired, the club moved quickly to tie Keith on a permanent contract that will keep him at the Crown Oil Arena until summer 2018.
The 30-year-old defender, who can also play in midfield, started his career with hometown club Luton and went on to make 277 appearances for The Hatters over the next nine seasons.
Keane joined Preston in the summer of 2013 and had loan spells at Crawley and Stevenage during his time at Deepdale, before linking-up with Cambridge in May 2015. He returned to Stevenage for a further loan spell last year.
