JOB TITLE: First Team Physical Performance Coach

REPORTING TO: First Team Head Coach

LOCATION: Platt Lane Training Ground (M14 7UU), plus home and away fixture locations

HOURS: Full time

REMUNERATION: Circa £30,000 per annum


Founded in 1907, Rochdale AFC is an established professional football club, who will compete in The National League for the 2024/25 season, alongside FA Cup and FA Trophy knockout competition commitments. We are involved in a broad range of sporting, commercial, and charitable activities, with a controlling stake in the club recently acquired by The Ogden Family.

To strengthen and further develop our technical staff, we are looking to recruit a First Team Physical Performance Coach, who ideally will have previous experience in a similar role. The role will be full time, covering all first team activity, including but not limited to training, fixtures, and player rehabilitation. This is a great opportunity to be part of a multi-disciplinary team in a senior football environment.

The successful candidate will be a Sport Science graduate (or related discipline), preferably with a MSc level qualification. Demonstratable experience in a first team football environment would be advantageous, although those from Academy football, or other sporting backgrounds, may also be considered.


o Play a leading role on matchday. This includes but is not limited to physical preparation of the matchday squad, nutrition, hydration, and post-match conditioning when/if required.

o Play a key role alongside the wider technical staff in training session design, including leading activation, warm ups, and other elements of sessions where necessary.

o Play a key role in leading gym-based strength and conditioning sessions to cater for both the full squad, and individual players where necessary.

o Work in close partnership with sports therapy staff regarding injury management, rehabilitation, and return to play pathways, etc..

o Monitor the internal and external training loads of the first team squad and advise on the current status of the squad to the rest of the first team staff.

o Oversee the collection, collation, and distribution of GPS player training and matchday data.

o Oversee physical performance testing of players at regular intervals throughout the season.

o Co-ordinate the stock/ordering of nutrition support through the club’s supplement partners.

o Periodic communication with Academy staff to ensure continuity of provision across first team and Academy.

o Commitment to undertaking continual professional development in order to maintain an up to date understanding of best practice.




Sport Science degree, or equivalent.

MSc in a physical performance related field.

Experience in a professional sport environment.

First team football experience.

Proficiency with platforms such as Catapult.

Expertise in a range of relevant software.

Knowledge of football-related best practice.

Maintaining knowledge of latest developments.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Able to cultivate positive relationships quickly.

Team player, with the ability to work independently.

Ability to lead and develop a small team.

Able to work unsociable hours.

Based in or around Greater Manchester.
