Report | Dale Women 1-2 Athletico Middleton Ladies

20 February 2024

Dale Women were narrowly beaten on Sunday in the Greater Manchester Women's Football League.

A 90th minute goal saw Dale agonisingly lose and finish the game empty-handed, despite dominating most parts of the game.

“We started as the brighter team,” said Atkinson.

“We were moving the ball around well, but we struggled to break down the Middleton defence.

“We forced them into a long ball game. But even then, they were still dangerous.

“Middleton took the lead due to us not being quick enough to close down a shot from the edge of the box.

“After that, they controlled the game and ran down the clock, with players going down injured for five to ten minutes at a time.

“We feel that the time was not added back on.

“Regardless of that, we continued to try and play the right way, but we still found it difficult to break Middleton down.

“In the 80th minute, we did get a well-deserved equaliser. Shannon Gill rounded the keeper to make it 1-1.

“We continued on the front foot and were looking for the winner. We looked like we were the most likely team to claim the three points.

“However, it was Middleton who took the lead and won the game in the 90th minute following another long ball, which caught us out with their striker making no mistake.

“We will learn from the game and hopefully set the record straight in next weekend’s semi-final against Middleton.”

As Lee said, the Dale Women will be looking to get their revenge against Athletico Middleton Ladies, whilst eyeing up a spot in the Greater Manchester League Challenge Cup final.

Kick-off at Hopwood Hall College [Rochdale Rd, Middleton, Manchester M24 6XH] this Sunday is at 2pm.
