Report | Dorking Wanderers 1-2 Dale

23 September 2023

Dale staged a remarkable stoppage time turnaround to secure all three points away to Dorking Wanderers.

Tom Blair put the hosts ahead just before the hour mark, but a 90th minute equaliser from Ethan Ebanks-Landell was followed by a dramatic 96th minute winner from Ian Henderson.

Jimmy McNulty made one change from Tuesday night’s draw at Boreham Wood, with Ian Henderson replacing Jesurun Uchegbulam, who was on the bench.

Dale won a free-kick in a dangerous a position inside the opening minute, but Tyrese Sinclair, who was the man fouled, was denied by a brave Dorking head in the wall.

James McShane had the hosts’ first effort of the game, volleying over from just inside the area, before Dale had a period of domination.

Harvey Gilmour had a shot blocked from the edge of the area, but Dale kept the move alive, and it led to Cameron John crossing for Gilmour, whose header was deflected narrowly wide.

From the resulting corner, Adam Clayton played a low ball towards Sinclair, but couldn’t make proper contact with his first-time effort and the hosts cleared.

Jimmy Keohane came inches away from opening the scoring after a quick Dale break, hitting his left foot effort just wide from 20-yards.

Another flowing counterattack from McNulty’s men led to Henderson playing a superb first-time ball behind the defence for Kairo Mitchell, who drove into the area before squaring for Sinclair, but superb defending from George Fraancomb saw him get back to turn the ball over his own bar.

Gilmour saw a shot from distance held low by Wanderers goalkeeper Harrison Male, before the hosts had the final two efforts of the half, as Tom Blair curled over, and substitute Ryan Seager had a low effort comfortably held by Louie Moulden.

After the break, a Clayton corner almost crept in as it flashed across goal, whilst Cameron John fired an effort well over.

It was more of an even second-half, with Moulden holding Jason Prior’s shot and Seager firing over, before Sinclair flashed an effort wide from 25-yards.

The home side broke the deadlock just before the hour mark. Blair received a diagonal ball out on the left and cut inside before firing home from 20-yards.

Dale responded with Mitchell seeing an effort deflected over and a close-range effort saved, following substitute Uchegbulam’s pull-back.

Ebanks-Landell headed off target and Clayton saw a free-kick tipped round the post by Harrison Male.

The Dorking stopper then held Keohane’s shot, before Moulden at the other end turned Seager’s volley wide of the upright.

Josh Taylor should have wrapped up the points for the hosts, but he blazed over from Matt Briggs’ pull-back, which would prove to be costly when Dale equalised in the 90th minute.

A free-kick into the Dorking area eventually fell for Ebanks-Landell, who calmly volleyed home from 12-yards.

Dale believed they could go on to get a winner and the hosts were reduced to ten men moments later, when Dan Pybus was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Sinclair.

McNulty’s men continued to push and in the 96th minute, Henderson’s poachers finish from Keohane’s shot sent the travelling supporters wild and earned a fifth win of the campaign.
