We Don't Give Up - McNulty

23 September 2023

Jimmy McNulty said he was proud of his players for their late comeback in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Dorking Wanderers.

Dale trailed heading into the 90th minute, when Ethan Ebanks-Landell’s equaliser was followed by Ian Henderson’s 96th minute winner.

The Head Coach praised the character of the group.

“This team doesn’t give up,” said McNulty. “That’s why I’m really proud of them.

"Honestly, if we’d have lost that game 1-0 and we didn’t score, I would have stood here and said to you the team fought all the way, this team always fights all the way.

"I think that they’ve got great character. I can forgive them when they get the skills wrong or their execution wrong, and if we wouldn’t have managed to score today, I would have forgiven them, because they don’t give up.

"Their fight was there up until the end. Truthfully, once we did get that first goal, we felt like a serious outfit that was on the hunt for the second, and I think we were good value for it in the end.

"We really stressed Dorking. They did everything to hold on. By the end there was a lot of last-ditch tackles, guys getting sent off, and we were always putting them really under it.

"The challenge for us was, can we go and be that team that can go and reverse a fixture late on, and fortunately we were. I was very happy with that, and I think our fans were too."

McNulty said he knew the trip to Meadowbank would be a massive challenge and that he felt it was Dale’s most difficult game of the season so far.

“That was a very difficult game, probably our most difficult game this season, if I’m being honest, and we’ve won it.

“What I mean by that is all the factors. I was speaking to their manager at the end of the game, and he said that they were top five last season in home form.

“I know they beat some notable teams here. I know they beat Notts County here.

“It’s a difficult place to come, the surface makes it very difficult. Every time today when we were playing our way, and we were nearly away from them, somebody would get back and just make a tackle, the pitch it would slow you down slightly.

“You don’t want to talk about the pitch, you don’t want to blame the pitch, but whether we had won 2-1 today or lost 1-0, I couldn’t not mention the pitch because it was a massive factor in the game.

“As I say, every time I thought that we just created something, when we were just getting away from someone, the pitch would make us check, our players would have to take an extra touch all the time. It was a really difficult factor.

“If it would have rained, it would have helped. You can’t water it obviously, but it would have made it a bit slicker. That would have been more helpful. I just knew what a massive challenge that this was going to be.

“We showed unbelievable character, kept going all the way till the end with the way we play. I was very proud of the team.”
