Should Have It Won By Half-Time - McNulty

30 September 2023

Jimmy McNulty says Dale should have put Saturday’s game to bed in the first-half.

His side drew 2-2 at home to Southend United, despite taking a 2-0 lead inside the opening 25 minutes.

The Head Coach thought Dale could have been well ahead at the break.

“I think we should have the game won by half-time,” said McNulty.

“We were very good first-half, but guilty, in my opinion, of some complacency. With our non-elite ruthlessness, to take advantage of a game that was totally our way.

“I just watched it back briefly [before the interview] and it could be 4-0 at half-time. I think if we are, there’s not a game anymore.

“Not being 4-0 at half-time, we allow the element of doubt in through conceding a goal.

“There’s always that potential with being at this stage as a team – we’re not a top, top team yet and it’s early for us – we let that doubt in and we haven’t got enough confidence yet to go and take total control and kill the game like we should have.

“Due to the nature of the game swinging in favour of the opponents for some spell in the second-half, up until they went to 2-2, I was glad that we managed to wrestle back control of the game.

“We looked like a team that was going to win the game. Southend changed shape to try to stop us at 2-2, which is credit to them. They showed good character to come back and they’re happy with their point today.

“We’re unhappy with the point, which is probably a decent sign with where we are.”
