I Couldn’t Be More Proud Of The Players - McNulty

27 September 2023

Jimmy McNulty said he was proud of his players in Tuesday’s defeat at home to Chesterfield.

Dale were beaten 2-1 at home by the league leaders, but the Head Coach highlighted the bravery of his players to perform against the Spireites.

“I’ve never been as proud in defeat as I am tonight,” said McNulty.

“The bravery of the players, under the lights in front of the cameras, I thought we were amazing.

“Chesterfield are the big boys in the division, and you can see why. They can score in a number of ways, they have serious power, serious squad depth, which is what that budget gets you. It gives you access to those players and if three star players aren’t doing it, they can bring on another three.

“You could see that in moments, but truthfully, I thought we pushed them all the way. I thought we were the better team tonight, in my opinion, and it’s a shame that for such a courageous performance from the players, we take nothing.

“But, I don’t feel disappointed, I really don’t. The personality and bravery of the players was amazing, and I’m so proud of them.

“I think we can learn a lot about the players [from tonight]. We’re still a work in progress. I genuinely think this team is outperforming the circumstances that it’s in at the moment.

“Young players are playing in our team, such as young George [Nevett], who is performing amazingly.

“It indicates where we’re at versus Chesterfield, when we’re taking their fourth or fifth choice winger from them [Jesurun Uchegbulam] – we’re delighted to have Jez – but that’s where they’re at.

“Despite that, I still thought we were amazing, and for the whole of the second-half, we had the ball and had them in their half. They hung in, but I couldn’t be more proud of the players.

"We’ve got a serious run of games right now, with a real threadbare squad, but I’m taking momentum and positivity from tonight’s game, and the players should too.”
