A Quick Look At Hendo's 400 Dale Appearances

7 September 2023

Saturday’s game against FC Halifax Town marked Ian Henderson’s 400th game in a Rochdale shirt.

We’ve taken a look at some of those matches from across the years.

2012/13 Season

Henderson made his Rochdale debut on March 2nd, 2013, in a 3-0 defeat away to Morecambe. The striker put pen to paper with Dale on the Tuesday leading up to the game, joining the club as a free agent after being released by Colchester United.

The now 38-year-old didn’t have to wait long for his first goal, scoring just one week after his Debut against Wycombe in a 4-1 win in what was his first appearance at the Crown Oil Arena in a Dale shirt.

Henderson scored Dale’s first goal of the day as well as the equaliser after Wycombe took the lead.

A low-struck shot following Andrew Tutte's free-kick saw him notch his first of what was to be many goals in a Rochdale shirt.

Henderson made 12 appearances in total after signing for the club in the second half of the 2012/13 season, scoring three goals helping Dale to a 12th-placed finish in League Two.

2013/14 Season

This season proved to be Henderson’s busiest season so far, making 52 appearances across the promotion-winning campaign, whilst notching up 12 goals.

The forward made his 50th Dale appearance in February 2014 in a 1-1 draw with Burton Albion.

His goal against Leeds United in Dale’s 2-0 win in the fourth of the FA Cup is still regarded very highly at the club, alongside the win itself at the Crown Oil Arena.

A crisp volley from just inside the penalty box looped into the far corner sending the Dale supporters at the Crown Oil Arena wild.

The 2013/14 campaign also proved to be a very successful one for Henderson and Dale as promotion back into League One was achieved following a third-placed finish.

2014/15 Season

Henderson had another action-packed season across the 2014/15 campaign, racking up 50 Dale appearances and scoring a season-best 22 goals.

His 100th Dale appearance came this season when Dale beat Crewe Alexandra 4-0 at the Crown Oil Arena with two goals coming from the talisman.

With nearly a goal every other game, Henderson finished second in the race for the Golden Boot, missing out by just three goals. Joe Garner for Preston North End was the winner with 25 goals to his name.

His efforts helped Dale to an eighth-place finish in League One, just six points behind Chesterfield who occupied the final play-off spot.

2015/16 Season

The Dale forward made 42 appearances across the 2015/16 season, scoring 13 times.

His 150th Dale appearance came against Coventry City in March 2016, Dale were 1-0 winners on the day with Henderson scoring the only goal of the game.

A big milestone for Henderson came in this season as he netted for the 50th time in Rochdale colours.

He fired home from the spot to do so in a 3-2 win over Oldham.

Henderson enjoyed a real run of form between November and January scoring eight times in 11 games.

A tenth-place finish in League One was the end result for Henderson and Dale in the 2015/16 season.

2016/17 Season

49 appearances and 19 goals were Henderson’s numbers across the 2016/17 season, helping Dale to a ninth-place finish in League One.

In April 2017, Henderson played his 200th Rochdale game in a 3-0 win against Port Vale, again on the scoresheet was Dale’s number 40.

Another positive season for the Dale forward saw him hit several different in-form periods, with his best coming over the festive period when he netted six times in four games.

One of his 19 goals came in Dale’s 3-0 win against Port Vale at the Crown Oil Arena in the latter stages of the season, this game was also significant as it marked his 200th Rochdale appearance.

2017/18 Season

Another 50 appearances this season for the Dale bagsman, who also added another 20 goals to his tally.

Henderson made his 250th Dale appearance in a 3-1 win against Shrewsbury Town that season, he marked it with yet another goal.

One of his 20 goals that season came against Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur in the fifth round of the FA Cup. A 2-2 draw at the Crown Oil Arena earned Dale the opportunity to play a replay at Wembley.

In that game at the Crown Oil Arena Henderson put Dale ahead in the first-half, with his sixth goal in that competition during the 2017/18 campaign. After an equaliser from Lucas Moura and a late penalty from Harry Kane, Steven Davis dramatically grabbed a stoppage-time equaliser to take Dale to Wembley.

2018/19 Season

21 goals in 49 games made up Henderson’s 2018/19 campaign.

300 Dale games soon crept up, with the forward completing that feat in a 1-0 win against Accrington Stanley.

The forward scored his 100th Dale goal in November of this season against Gateshead in a 2-1 win.

However, a century of goals wasn’t the only thing that Henderson was marking on the day. His celebration revealed that he and his wife were expecting their first child.

Another highlight from that campaign came when Dale welcomed Gillingham to the Crown Oil Arena. Henderson scored three times to claim the matchball and the three points for Dale in a 3-0 win.

2019/20 Season

In March 2020, the EFL alongside the FA announced the suspension of all domestic football until April, which was then extended for the foreseeable future.

Despite the season being cut short, Henderson managed to bag himself 16 goals in 39 games, continuing to add to his impressive Rochdale goal tally.

Dale fans will also remember the 1-1 draw with Newcastle United at the Crown Oil Arena, earning them a replay at St. James' Park.

It was announced in June 2020 that Henderson would be leaving Rochdale after scoring 126 goals and cementing his place in history as Rochdale’s second-highest-ever goalscorer.

2022/23 Season

The Ian Henderson and Rochdale story was not finished. The Dale legend returned to the club in the summer of 2022, with the club’s all-time goal-scoring record in sight, needing just four goals to beat it.

First up, Henderson made his 350th Dale appearance against Sheffield Wednesday in the Carabao Cup.

Following that goals against Accrington Stanley, Salford City and Tranmere Rovers meant that Henderson was Rochdale’s joint all-time record goal scorer alongside Reg Jenkins.

On Tuesday the 8th of November 2022, Ian Henderson got onto the end of an Ethan Brierley over-the-top pass and nodded home to become the football club's all-time record goal scorer with 130 goals.

Across the 2022/23 campaign, Henderson picked up 50 appearances in total, scoring ten times.

2023/24 Season

With three goals in seven games already, Henderson does not look to be slowing down.

In Rochdale's game against FC Halifax Town at home, the striker made his 400th club appearance. A stat which has him second place in our all-time appearance list.

Well done, Hendo!
