We've Made Good Progress - Henderson

13 October 2023

Ian Henderson believes Dale have made huge progress in the first three months of the season.

The forward was speaking ahead of Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup trip to Hereford FC, a competition he says holds magical memories for him.

He is excited to be part of the competition once again.

“The FA Cup is magical,” said Henderson.

“For myself personally, there have been many magical occasions being a footballer for Rochdale, playing in the FA Cup.

“It’s got a long-standing history. It’s new territory playing in this round but we’re going to give it our best shot. The excitement of the cup is there for squad.

“Historically they [Hereford] have a good history about them as a football club. We’re not going into the game lightly at all.

“We’re in it to win it and we take Hereford very seriously, because they’re a serious football club like us. Our intention is to go and win and be in the next round.

“There are definitely a few memories, but the standout moment for me would be at home against Leeds United.

“Winning 2-0, it was a momentous occasion for the Club. It really galvanised us and brought Rochdale together as a whole, to see that giant killing and it was thoroughly deserved on the day.”

Speaking about Dale’s start to the season, Dale’s all-time leading goalscorer believes there have been positive steps forward in our opening 15 matches.

“It’s right the way that our manager [Jimmy McNulty] has broken down the season into segments. It’s always good to reflect and learn, absorb where we are up to as a squad, look at where we’ve done well and where we need to improve.

“The FA Cup gives us a little bit of a step away from the cauldron of the league because it has been relentless. There has been four to five weeks of travelling, playing Saturday Tuesday, Saturday Tuesday.

“We’ve had a short break away from the training facility, but the rest of this week and today will be focused on where we can improve as a group of players and individually. We’ve taken stock 15 games in, and where we were 12 to 18 months ago, we’re light years ahead. Huge progress has been made.

“It's been amazing [to be a part of]. You have an affinity with a football club if you spend a lot of time there, and all you ever wish for is those good moments and wins to galvanise people.

“I do believe, as a group, in spells we have shown a really good threat, but because it is a new group, we have to gel and get to know one another.

“But overall, I’m really pleased with where we are at this moment in time, in comparison to where we were this time last year. We’ve made good, positive steps forward as a football club.

“You only have to look at the likes of Kairo [Mitchell] and George Nevett going away on international duty.

“I don’t say that lightly and I don’t say this disrespectfully, but we are a National League team at this moment in time, and to have a couple of international players on our books – I’m pretty proud of that, and I hope everyone else associated with the club is. Because to have that calibre of player at your club means you’re doing something right.”
