Youth Team Report | Dale 2-1 Fleetwood Town

19 March 2023

The Youth Team overcame a tight encounter to win 2-1 against Fleetwood Town in the EFL Youth Alliance League and extend their unbeaten run to 10 in the division.

Goals from Paul Kyffin and Joe Cunningham ensured Dale continued their excellent form, despite a late consolation from the visitors.

The opening stages saw both sides look threatening, however it was Fleetwood with the first major chance. An attempt from just inside the area was blocked on the line by a fellow teammate when it was certain to find the back of the net.

At the other end, Kevin Dos Santos looked to continue his fine form in front of goal but his effort from a narrow-angle dragged across the face of goal and wide of the far post.

The Dale midfielder then had a glorious chance to break the deadlock 16 minutes in as the ball dropped for him nicely in the area. However, his fierce strike was repelled well by the Town goalkeeper as he tipped over.

Fleetwood had the best opportunity of the game four minutes later, a towering header smashing off Craven’s post with Dale managing to escape.

It wasn’t until just before half-time though that the deadlock was broken and it was Dale with the all-important goal. Dos Santos found himself just in front of goal but couldn’t squeeze it underneath the keeper. Eventually, he dug a cross out to the back stick where the grateful Kyffin waited to slam home and give Dale the lead at a vital time of the game.

Rochdale kept the momentum going in the second 45 and really should have had a two-goal margin in the 51st minute. Anisio Jesus, replacing Oscar Kelly, was picked out superbly by Cunningham on the right and the winger looked destined to score but his effort was straight at the keeper.

72 minutes on the clock and Dale escaped another scare. Fleetwood’s substitute directed a header towards goal but it trickled just off target and this would be one to look back on for the Cods.

Five minutes later, Dale earned themselves a penalty. There was some fantastic work from the substitute Tyjon as he received the ball from Yaduat and as he raced towards goal, he tried to round the keeper, but was subsequently brought down before he could find the net.

Joe Cunningham stepped up to slide the ball coolly to the goalkeeper’s left hand side, a goal that was merited due to the young right-back’s performance.

That looked to secure all three points as Town heads were down, although after a couple of half chances they did manage a late goal. Seven minutes were added on and in the fifth of those, the Fleetwood winger curled a left footed beauty into the far corner, leaving Craven with no chance.

Dale saw out the remaining moments to halt Fleetwood’s title push and climb up to eighth in the Youth Alliance Table with the victory.

Dale XI | Craven, Cunningham, Sutton, Dos Santos, Watts, Nevett, Yaduat, Ayub, Ehimamiegho, Kyffin, Jesus.
