Report | Chorley FC 1-0 Dale

15 July 2023

Dale’s third pre-season outing ended in a 1-0 defeat at Chorley.

Justin Johnson’s 11th minute goal proved to be the difference in the scoreline, in a game which saw a host of players gain over an hour of game time.

New goalkeeper Louie Moulden, on loan from Wolves, started in goal, with a back four of Kwaku Oduroh, Max Taylor, Kyle Ferguson and Jimmy Keohane. Adam Clayton got his first action in a Dale shirt alongside Harvey Gilmour, with Trialist A and Tyrese Sinclair in the wide areas. Devante Rodney and Kairo Mitchell started up top.

Dale saw plenty of the ball in the opening exchanges, but the first real chance fell to the hosts, which they took.

Johnson won the ball on the Dale right and burst into the area, before lifting the ball over Moulden from the near post area.

Ferguson then blocked an effort from the close range on the line, before Sinclair fired Dale’s first effort off target from 25-yards.

Mitchell came inches away from equalising in the 19th minute, heading Clayton’s corner off the underside of the bar.

Chorley goalscorer Thomas saw an effort from outside of the area deflected over, before Moulden produced a fine one-handed save, turning Louis Britton’s effort over the bar.

The head of Mitchell met another Clayton delivery heading wide, before Keohane was denied by a fine block from a Chorley defender and being fed by Sinclair, who was close to equalising on the stroke of half-time.

Moulden’s long pass forward was headed down by Sinclair into the path of Rodney, who returned the favour by laying off to Sinclair, with his shot from 25-yards taking a deflection and flashing past the far post.

Trialist B replaced Clayton at the break, with Brad Kelly replacing Moulden shortly before the hour mark.

The hosts fired a couple of efforts off target, before Sinclair’s swirling free-kick from distance was turned over the bar by the home goalkeeper.

Sinclair then caught an acrobatic effort cleanly, which was blocked, with Trialist B firing over the rebound.

There were a host of changes for Dale midway through the second period. Ethan Ebanks-Landell, George Nevett, Cameron John, Kevin Dos Santos, Cody Johnson, Oscar Kelly, Moe Shubbar, Ian Henderson and Darren Ehimamiegho all came on to see out the game.

Dale created a couple of openings in the remaining time, with Oscar Kelly seeing a shot saved and Shubbar firing narrowly over from 20-yards, as our third pre-season friendly came to a conclusion.

Dale XI | Moulden (58’ Kelly), Oduroh (65’ Dos Santos), Taylor (65’ Ebanks-Landell), Ferguson (65’ Nevett), Keohane (65’ John), Clayton (45’ Trialist B), Gilmour (65’ Johnson), Trialist A (65’ Shubbar), Sinclair (65’ O Kelly), Mitchell (65’ Henderson), Rodney (65’ Ehimamiegho).
