Report | Hartlepool United 2-0 Dale

21 January 2023

Dale suffered a 2-0 defeat at Hartlepool United on Saturday, ending the game with nine men.

After a goalless first-half, Ethan Ebanks-Landell was issued with a straight red card for a dangerous tackle.

The hosts took full advantage, scoring twice in the next 13 minutes through Josh Umerah and Jack Hamilton to take all three points.

Sam Graham was also sent off in the 90th minute after two bookable offences, meaning Dale ended with a two-man disadvantage.

Jim Bentley made two changes to the side that started last weekend’s game against Colchester United. Femi Seriki and Cameron John came in for Aidy White, who left the game against the U’s with concussion, and Sam Graham, who dropped to the bench.

Dale began the brighter of the two teams, with Seriki coming close at the back post after meeting Ian Henderson’s cross, but he saw an effort well blocked at source.

Umerah and Edon Pruti both had headers saved by Jake Eastwood, before Devante Rodney headed inches wide at the other end from Max Taylor’s cross.

Danny Lloyd found space 25-yards from the Hartlepool goal and sent a curling effort just inches wide of the far post, before his free-kick from a similar distance was held down low by Pools’ goalkeeper Ben Killip.

Joe Grey sent an effort well off target for the hosts, shortly before Killip was called into action again at the other end, saving Seriki’s far corner bound effort from just inside the area.

Umerah also fired wide before Taylor’s header from Liam Kelly’s cross was comfortably collected by the home stopper.

Dale were down to ten men just six minutes after the break through, when Ebanks-Landell’s high challenge on Hamilton saw him issued with a straight red card.

Just three minutes later, the hosts took the lead. Eastwood made a good stop from the initial effort inside the area, but the ball ricocheted to Umerah who tapped home.

The hosts doubled the lead shortly after the hour mark, when Hamilton was on hand to turn home a rebound, following Eastwood’s save from a long-range shot.

James Ball, Sam Graham, Scott Quigley and Tyrese Sinclair were all introduced, but Graham saw red for a second bookable offence in the 90th minute, as Dale couldn’t find anything to give them a fighting chance in the game.
