Bentley Pleased With Defensive Display

3 January 2023

Jim Bentley was pleased with his side’s defensive display in Monday’s goalless draw at Barrow.

Dale picked up a first clean sheet since November and the boss says defending like that has to be the minimum requirement going forward.

“I’m pleased,” said Bentley.

“I’m not over the moon and doing cartwheels about it. It’s a point on the board and a clean sheet. It breaks the cycle that we’ve been on.

“Defending our box like that is the minimum requirement. We put bodies on the line and worked hard – not that we haven’t in the recent games, but we just haven’t been good enough in key areas.

“We’ve studied the goals we’ve conceded and looked at where we can do more going forward. I thought we played a lot better the other day and got beat. Today, we didn’t really create much. We were more workman like and ground it out.

“They haven’t created much either – I think Rich [O’Donnell] had made one or two routine saves.

“It’s a fair result for me and something for us to build on. A clean sheet and a point on the road.

“We’ve just got to keep working hard and believing ourselves. Whatever game we go into, the minimum requirement is doing what did today with regards to defending our box.

“We found a way today to get a point and a clean sheet. When questions were asked of us with the ball going into our box, we defended well, we protected Rich well, and we’ve got to do that in every game we go into. The minimum requirement is do all you can to get that clean sheet.

“It’s a new year, we’ve been disappointed but what’s gone has gone. You can’t affect the past – it’s all about the future.

“To be fair to the lads, they’ve worked hard, we’ve been in virtually every day, and we’re going to give them a little break now to recover and get themselves ready for a big week coming up with three games next week.”
