Youth Team Report | Dale 3-1 Oldham Athletic

19 February 2023

The Youth Team ensured a vital 3-1 win over Oldham Athletic in the EFL Youth Alliance League, despite an early second-half setback.

Goals from Kevin Dos Santos (two) and Oscar Kelly were the difference, after Oldham had drawn level from the penalty spot.

Both sides started the game on the front foot, with Rochdale creating the first chance in the opening minute. Ehimamiegho was found in behind the defence, but he was denied by a superb block in front of goal.

Oldham had a couple of attempts early on, but Ellis Craven was a relative spectator during the first-half.

15 minutes in, captain George Nevett should have given Dale the lead. He sent a free header at the back post directly at the visiting goalkeeper, who made the save and the chance had gone.

Paddy Watts had a header cleared from the line at the near post and moments later Ehimamiegho was played through on goal, but his effort was repelled excellently by the ‘keeper.

The breakthrough finally came on the half-hour mark. Oscar Kelly floated an intriguing delivery into the middle and Dos Santos beat his man to head Dale into a first-half lead.

However, barely a few minutes into the second-half, Oldham were given a penalty after a mistimed challenge in the box. The visitors had started the second-half on top and they converted the penalty to draw level.

Dale’s response to that goal was instant and they almost replied straight away, but Ehimamiegho’s tight angled strike came back off the post.

Oldham wasted a chance on the edge of the box with a powerful attempt that only just evaded Craven’s crossbar.

Although, with 64 minutes on the clock, and with Dale’s goal under pressure, Dos Santos popped up with his second. A hopeful ball was flung into the box and with bodies everywhere, the calmest man was Dos Santos, who struck cleanly into the bottom corner to regain the lead.

Dos Santos had to come off the field due to injury with 20 minutes remaining and received a rapturous applause from the Dale bench.

Rochdale’s hearts were in their mouths when Oldham bundled the ball home, but the linesman flagged for a foul in the build-up.

This didn’t defer Dale from the task in hand and they managed to grab a third. Oscar Kelly slammed home after neat interplay, in which Ehimamiegho could have gone for goal himself, but picked his head up and set up a brilliant team goal.

Dale held out comfortably to put an end to a run of 2-2 draws and climb up the Youth Alliance Table.
