Central League Cup Report | Dale 1-1 Rotherham United

28 February 2023

A young Rochdale side battled hard to secure a point from the final group game of the Central League Cup on Tuesday.

In a team made up of scholars and Academy players, it was Brooklyn Bailey’s equaliser that earned Dale a point.

The game started slow and scrappy with few chances coming from either side. Dale goalkeeper Ellis Craven made two great saves to deny the visitors from opening the scoring in the first-half.

Oscar Kelly had Dale’s best chance of the opening period, with his strike from the edge of the box just going over the bar.

It remained goalless at the break, with Paddy Watts having the first chance of the second-half, heading just over from a corner.

It was Rotherham who opened the scoring six minutes after the interval. A long throw into the box fell to their captain on the edge of the penalty area, and he fired his effort past Craven to give the Millers lead.

After going behind, Dale rallied well and played on the front foot, with efforts from George Nevett and Darren Ehimamiegho just off target.

With 65 minutes played, Dale found an equaliser. Joe Cunningham flashed the ball across the box, evading the Rotherham goalkeeper, and finding Bailey at the back post to pass the ball into the empty net.

There weren’t too many chances created after the equaliser, with the game ending honours even.

Dale must wait for Rotherham to play their final game in the group – against Lincoln City – before finding out whether they have progressed to the semi-finals of the competition.
