Came Up Just Short - Bentley

5 February 2023

Jim Bentley rued fine dividing lines after Dale’s defeat Salford City on Saturday.

Scott Quigley’s late penalty proved to be just a consolation, after two goals from Conor McAleny put the hosts ahead.

Bentley there were positives to take from the game but admitted Dale must defend better.

“We were playing a good side, who have had a good win in midweek, and we’ve run them very close,” said the gaffer.

“But we keep saying the same things – we’re like a nearly team. We nearly get there; we nearly get a point.

“I thought we started the game okay. They hit us a couple of times – we were a little bit makeshift with new players in the building, but I have to say I thought they were excellent.

“We’re pleased in that regard, but we didn’t quite get the Owen Dodgson and Max Taylor partnership right and they got in a few times early on.

“We could have gone behind, but the goal looked too easy for Smith to put it in. We defended set plays reasonably well, apart from the two goals, and I think we can do better in those two moments.

“I need to look back at the first one but for the second, we’ve defended it well and then the ball has to either go out of the stand or right up the pitch, but we lose it on the edge of the box then we’re at sixes and sevens, then the lad smashes it in the net.

“I thought we were excellent in the second-half at times, we played some really good stuff. We asked questions of their back line; we had the penalty and a big shout for another penalty.

“We kept going and plugging away, but ultimately, we’ve come up just short. We’ve lost the game because of those two moments and we’ve got to be able to defend better.”
