A Cruel Blow - Bentley

12 February 2023

Jim Bentley says it was a cruel blow to concede late on against Northampton Town on Saturday.

Dale looked set to pick up three points after Ian Henderson’s opener seven minutes after the break, but Ben Fox’s wonder strike a minute from time saw the Cobblers snatch a point.

The gaffer was disappointed not to win but also keen to point out the positives.

“Apart from the very couple of seconds, and a couple of routine saves, Rich [O’Donnell] hasn’t really had much to do,” said Bentley.

“Having said that, he’s gained us a point at the end when the lad went through one-on-one.

“Naturally when you lose a goal lead so late in the game, it’s always a killer. I don’t know what I’ve done in a former life!

“We’ve defended well [throughout the game]. We won the first phase, we’ve done loads on defending the box and we just haven’t really dealt with the second phase.

“The lad has got in but we don’t half concede some screamers, do we. He’s absolutely caught that sweet. Whether he was trying to whizz it across the goal or whatever, it has nestled in the top corner.

“The game is cruel. But to look on the positive side, we asked loads of questions of the opposition.

“The first half was more about our shape and looking to break, and I think there were some real good signs.

“We’ve got some new players in the building as well who we are working with, and I think we deservedly went in the lead. I think we had five opportunities in the first five minutes of the second half.

“Hendo’s goal was great, and he’ll be disappointed with the other one from six yards that he missed.

“I thought we were going to comfortably [see it out] - well not comfortably because of the position that we’re in, there’s always that nervous edge and that anxiety that creeps in when you’re not used to being in that position.

“We slashed at a couple of clearances but we’re getting to that stage and I’m thinking, they’ve not got much more they can do and then that lad goes and smashes one right in the top corner of our goal.

“Killer, absolute killer. It makes you feel sick sometimes, but we’ve got to remain positive, keeping working hard and we can turn a performance like we have done today.

“I’ve got to say as well, last week [against Salford] when we looked back on the game, we were a little but unlucky. I think Carlisle at home, the refereeing decisions, you know, I don’t think we’re getting the rub of the green here.

“We should have had a penalty against Carlisle, they should have had a red card, we had a goal chalked off for offside.

“Hendo has probably had three or four here, which is the difference between a couple of points here and there which all helps, so it’s disappointing, but we’ve got to take it on the chin and come out fighting on Tuesday. It’s as simple as that.”
