Report | York City 1-3 Dale

28 August 2023

A pair of penalties from Tyrese Sinclair helped Dale to a 3-1 win at York City on Bank Holiday Monday.

He converted his first in the 36th minute after Ethan Ebanks-Landell had been shoved in the penalty area, but the hosts levelled matters through Adam Crookes in the 56th minute of the first-half, despite only six having been initially added.

Sinclair made it four goals in two games eight minutes after the break when Crookes was sent off for a last-man foul on Jimmy Keohane.

Ian Henderson, making his 399th Dale appearance, sealed the three points with a goal three minutes from time.

Jimmy McNulty made one change to the starting line-up from Friday’s draw with Bromley, as Kwaku Oduroh came in for the suspended Adam Clayton. Max Taylor returned to the matchday squad.

Sinclair, fresh off scoring twice in the draw against Bromley, had Dale’s early efforts, curling one just beyond the far post before smashing a volley over the bar from just inside the area.

He then found Ryan East on the edge of the box, whose shot was tipped over by York goalkeeper Ryan Whitley.

Cameron John had the ball in the back of the net just before the half hour mark, but was adjudged to be offside from Ian Henderson’s pull back.

Harvey Gilmour had a shot blocked wide of the near post, before Dale were awarded a penalty when Ebanks-Landell was shoved to ground when attacking a corner.

Sinclair stepped up and confidently converted the spot kick into the top corner for his fourth of the season.

There were some good blocks from Ebanks-Landell and John before the passage of play that led to York’s equaliser.

Oduroh was harshly booked for a foul on Maz Kouhyar, leading to Dipo Akinyemi firing a free-kick on target which Louie Moulden did superbly to tip over the bar.

From the resulting corner, Crookes found himself free and glanced a header beyond Moulden into the far corner, in the 11th minute of added time.

Shortly after the break, Moulden denied Kouhyar at his near post, before Dale were awarded another penalty.

Kairo Mitchell found Keohane with a fine through ball and he was bundled to ground by Crookes, who saw red as last man.

Sinclair stepped up and converted again, despite the goalkeeper getting a hand to it.

Mitchell then curled a left footed effort narrowly wide from 20-yards, before Moulden made a stunning save to claw away Callum Howe’s header which was destined for the bottom corner.

Gilmour fed a through ball to Mitchell who had an effort blocked, before sending his follow up over the bar from a tight angle.

Dale goalkeeper Moulden was called into action again with little over ten minutes remaining, turning Akinyemi’s header onto the crossbar, shortly before the striker lashed an effort off the crossbar from ten yards.

Moulden then held on to substitute Kai Kennedy’s well struck effort and those saves from the stopper proved crucial, allowing Dale to double the lead three minutes from time to seal the points.

A ball forward was controlled by Mitchell before it ricocheted off a York player and into the path of Henderson, who lifted it over the advancing goalkeeper and into the net for his 139th Dale goal.

It marked a third win of the season for McNulty’s men and move them up to fifth in the National League table.
