The Numbers Behind Saturday's Win

14 August 2023

We picked up our first win of the season at Oxford City on Saturday, thanks to Ian Henderson’s 137th goal for the club.

It was the least Dale deserved, having dominated possession as the hosts were content to sit back and make it difficult for Jimmy McNulty’s men to break them down.

His side ended the game with 64% possession, which led to 13 shots, 38% of which were on target (compared to nine and 11% for Oxford).

McNulty praised his players after the game for the patience they showed in possession, a prime example being Henderson’s strike.

Following a regain of possession in the middle third of the pitch, there were 14 passes which led to the goal.

Dale created 46 attacks throughout the game (26 for Oxford), with 22 attempted crosses and 40 penalty area entries.

At the other end, there was also a solid defensive display. Dale won 76% of their defensive duels and 54% of aerial duels (65% and 31% for Oxford respectively).

Meanwhile, the number of passes per defensive action (PPDA), which measures how well Dale pressed their opposition, was at 8.38 (19.42 for The Hoops).

Jimmy Keohane assisted the winning goal and he impressed with his individual display, recording a 92% passing accuracy and winning 64% of his defensive duels.

George Nevett led the way with number of passes, attempting 143 and completing 94%, closely followed by centre-back partner Ethan Ebanks-Landell, with 118 passes and also 94% accuracy.

Adam Clayton achieved an accuracy of 94% with his forward passes and winning 75% of his defensive duels.

Dale are straight back in action at Woking on Tuesday night, looking to make it back-to-back wins.
