Praise For Nevett's Man Of The Match Performance

7 August 2023

17-year-old George Nevett put in a Man of the Match performance on his first professional start at the weekend.

The defender only signed professional terms a week earlier, having impressed Jimmy McNulty towards the end of last season and during this pre-season.

The Head Coach felt it was a deserved selection on Saturday, which Nevett’s performance justified.

“I’ve been very impressed with George throughout pre-season, which led to the decision for me to start him today,” said McNulty.

“I saw Keith [Hill] before the game who said it was brave, but I said I don’t think it is. I’ve been watching him every day and he deserves it. He’s shown a level that, in our set of centre-backs that we’ve got, means he deserved to start.

“I thought he was excellent today. He handled the day brilliantly well for a 17-year-old.

“People might think you can’t chuck him in at the deep end in the National League, but I didn’t find that at all. He was very composed, defended brilliantly.

“There was one moment in the first-half where got caught down his channel, that’s it. Other than that, he was very composed and strengthened the team. I’ll have to manage him very carefully because he’s 17.

“What that will take out of him from a nervous energy point of view will be massive as well. I’m pleased for him, pleased for his family, and it wasn’t a gift. He deserved it. In my opinion, his performance justified my selection.”

Nevett joined the Academy as an Under-16, becoming a regular for the Youth Team before signing a two-year scholarship last summer.

He captained Dale’s Under-18s last season and made his professional debut in our final home match of the campaign, as a late substitute in the 4-1 win over Sutton United.

The left-footed centre-half has regularly featured this pre-season, impressing in his friendly outings, before putting in an assured display in our season opener.

He was chosen by Official Match Sponsors Profix Ltd as their Man of the Match.

Well played, George!
