Excellent Team Performance - McNulty

20 August 2023

Jimmy McNulty highlighted the character of his team after Saturday’s 2-0 win over Eastleigh.

Dale took all three points thanks to first-half goals from Ian Henderson and Kairo Mitchell.

The Head Coach praised the team performance after the game and emphasised the importance of their character.

“I thought we were full value for the win,” said McNulty.

“It was a good team performance. I thought it was a direct reaction from Tuesday night, if I’m being honest. We were more than good enough for a point in midweek with the chances that we had.

“Today we were very professionally ruthless. I thought we were dominant, and it could have been way more [than 2-0]. I was really pleased with the professionalism throughout. Every single player played for the team.

“Culture is massive for me, it’s something we’re working on daily and the good thing for me is that the players are now working on that daily. They’re showing me things, which is quite inspirational, and we talked about some of that before the game today.

“I’ve seen so many aspects of a selfless, non-individual performance today. There were brilliant individual performances, some of the guys were excellent, and they deserve accolades from me, but I feel like the team was excellent.

“The team is everything. Trying into instil that in the group is the most important thing for me. I think it will serve us well in the long-term.

“Ability can win you matches, and I want ability in the team. I want the showstoppers and the guys that can get fans out of their seats, and it does win you matches. But character triumphs over ability long-term for me.

“We’re working every day to try and find the balance. Today was a good performance on character and ability.”

McNulty also spoke about ensuring the squad continue to believe in the way they play.

“I honestly think barring 55/60 minutes at Woking, all of our games have looked like that [today]. The score lines have been different, but I believe in the way we’re playing.

“Over the course of things, we should have a constant belief in a certain way, and we should stick to it. The noise game to game is very different. It’s difficult not to be distracted by the noise but it’s my job to protect the players from the noise and keep them focused on what we collectively believe.

“When it comes to fruition with games like today, I think it’s amazing. One of the most amazing things for me today was in the last minute of the game – it probably went unnoticed to so many people – but they were on a counter-attack and the sprint recoveries from our team, flying past every single one of their players, the desire and will power to get back for the team.

“When there are seven or eight players back it’s easy to think ‘let them deal with it’, but all ten of ours got back and forced Eastleigh out of play. Moments like that are the epitome of the team for me.”

The Head Coach also confirmed that new signing Jesurun Uchegbulam could be out of action for the next month, after picking up an injury in the game at Woking.

“We’re down on numbers at the moment, which we try not to cry about.

“Jez has just come into the team, who is a brilliant addition that has to come up to speed about the way we play.

“But he tore his hamstring the other night, and will be out for three weeks, maybe four, which is a real shame.”
