Players Deserve The Credit - McNulty

2 April 2023

Jim McNulty said it is the players that deserve all the credit for Saturday’s 1-0 win at AFC Wimbledon.

The Interim Manager led Dale to all three points in the first game of his spell, thanks to Danny Lloyd’s second-half winner.

McNulty praised the players for sticking to the gameplan.

“I’m really pleased for the players and the fans, first and foremost,” said the 38-year-old.

“I’m pleased with their commitment to the plan that we put in place to win the game. We wanted to put a plan in place that we could stick to and work off.

“It was difficult in the first-half at times because we were really under stress. They were tested by a team that coming to press them, but we stuck to the gameplan excellently.

“They kept doing it even when it was difficult at times, but it proved fruitful in the end.

“We scored a brilliant goal which came off the back of that plan. We knew we could get a few moments in the game.

“It was a plan that I thought could give the players the best chance to be the best they can be, in the spaces on the pitch that I think they’re all the best in. The win was down to the players carrying out the individual skills and the elements that make these plans come together, so they deserve all the credit.

“There’s load of phases in that game was ‘wow’. Off the back of just two or three days training, a really hectic week, I thought it was a real positive. Moving forward, I think we can get even better. I really do. Playing the same way with the same principles.

“Shapes might change, people will change because we have injuries. There was a lot to suggest that we were down and out before this game, but I’m pleased we showed a lot of the stuff we planned to do.”

McNulty reserved praise for the 261 Dale fans who made the trip to the Cherry Red Records Stadium.

“Their performance was as important as the players’. I’m glad they got to celebrate mutually, not just the win but the goal as well. They were both nice moments.

“They sung their hearts out and it goes such a long way. They helped us and the players helped them to be heartened.

“The fans have a huge part to play and all I would promise them moving forward is that we will continue to do our best. We want the players to give everything, fight for everything, and you never know [what can happen].”
