Youth Team Report | Rochdale 2-1 Mansfield Town

5 September 2022

The Youth Team came from behind to win late on against Mansfield Town in the EFL Youth Alliance Cup on Saturday.

Goals from Anisio Jesus and Paddy Watts cancelled out Mansfield’s Jakub Kruszynski’s goal to help Dale secure a 2-1 victory over the Stags.

The visitors took the lead on 77 minutes when a well worked move found number 10 Kruszynski, who hammered home into the top corner from just inside the box. Dale ‘keeper Ellis Craven could only watch on as it flew in.

However, Rochdale came fighting back and levelled two minutes later. Jesus received the ball 25-yards from goal, moved it onto his right foot before curling his effort into the bottom right-hand corner to level the tie.

Two minutes after levelling, Dale took the lead. A corner swung in by Paul Kyffin found its way to Watts at the back who volleyed home to win the game for his side.

The win puts Dale top of their EFL Youth Alliance Cup group, following their win over Stockport County in their opening game of the competition.

Goal scorer Paddy Watts spoke on making goalscoring something he wants to add to his game.

“In my first year I didn’t really get any so it’s nice that I’m adding that to my game.”

Watts added that the game was good for his side’s development and made important that his side keep doing the same things every week.

“We’ve got a good bond as a team and even when we went 1-0 nil down, as a team we stuck together, we kept doing what we know we can do.”

Midfielder John Dunlop also spoke after the game and praised his teams efforts especially in the second half.

“We started a bit slow in the first half but in the second half we grew into the game, created more chances, and got back into the game,” said Dunlop.

“We showed good character towards the end and carried on getting on the ball and got back into the game.”

The Youth Team next play Port Vale this Saturday in the league.
